Dress Blues? Nah. Wild Blues!
Posted by Raven on July 26th, 2007
What does one do in Maine, on a hot sunny day in July or August? Besides going to the beach or sailing in the ocean, you can go blueberry picking. There are thousands of these fields up here…and the blueberries grow in abundance, uncultivated and wild-with no help from man. They are the best tasting berries- the wild ones.
And this morning, here’s what I did with some of the berries:

Yummy. Now to go make some of my own blueberry beer for later!!

And they’re great anti-oxidants too.

Oh, YUMMAY!!!! Raven, those look delicious! And your pix are gorgeous: the first couple remind me of that old, old children’s book, Blueberries for Sal. Did you ever read that with your kids?
Dang, woman - I’m going to have to visit Maine sometime soon. I’ll make the Beloved Husband break out the RV and we and the Munchkin will go up and spend a week enjoying all that wild, New England beauty…
Beautiful, luv!

I LOVE blueberrys (but Blueberry Beer is JUST WRONG)and though I’ve seen them growing wild, I’ve NEVER seen such a huge bunch of them. And the pancakes look good too!

Yes Kat- I have read that book DOZENS of times to my kids when they were little.
In fact I used that book as an prop for what was supposed to be an educational opportunity…the book reading; the berry picking; the cooking/jarring/preserving lesson and THEN using the preserves as gifts later in the yr….I had it all figured out.
Until we went blueberry picking…here in NH at a local BB farm in Wilton where they grow those big disgusting cultivate flavorless blue orbs. LOL…the kids stepped on an ant hill and were literally attacked- within seconds they were covered with nasty red ants and being bitten up left and right! We had to spray the ants off and take them to the local ER just in case allergic reactions began. Thankfully nothing came of THAT.
Up in Maine they don’t seem to have the ant problem. I read somewhere that BB farms use growth enhancing materials that attract ants…in the wild this stuff isn’t used so hence, the lack of ants. BUT there were a lot of BEES here.
I have GALLONS of berries. Going to make jams and preserves for Christmas Gifts!! Along with breads and cakes and cookies- granola blueberry cookies. mmMMmm YUMMAY!!

Michael if you play with and eat the berries (***THUD***) remember to bring something that takes out those stains.

We have TONS of wild raspberry bushes in my town. And of course they’re up here too everywhere. Those, and wild strawberries. Which are JUST YUMMY too…I HATE the big strawberries because they have no flavor compared to the little wild things.
I guess I just prefer the wild side of life!!

Oh and the pannycakes weren’t THAT good. I didn’t have all my ingredients so…a box of Biscuit just doesn’t MAKE THE GRADE for me. No butter or real syrup either. **SIGH**
Syrup…hmm…I’m gonna make some now.
